Backsliding

Job 34:25,26,27 Therefore He knoweth their works, and He 
overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.

He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;

Because they turned back from Him, and would not consider 
any of His ways.

Psalm 85:8 I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for He 
will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let 
them not turn again to folly.

Proverbs 2:10,11,12 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and
knowledge is pleasant to thy soul;
 
Discretion shall preserve theee, understanding shall keep thee:

To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that
speaketh froward things;

Proverbs 2:13,14 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk 
in the ways of darkness;

Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the 
wicked;

Proverbs 29:1 he, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, 
shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Isaiah 9:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a 
seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have 
forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel 
unto anger, they are gone away backward.

Jeremiah 2:19,20,21 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, 
and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and 
see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast 
forsaken the Lord thy God, and that My fear is not in thee, 
saith the Lord God of hosts.

For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands: 
and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high 
hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the 
harlot.

Jeremiah 2:22 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a 
right Seed: how they art thou turned into the degenerate plant 
of a strange vine unto me?

Jeremiah 3:6,7,8 The Lord said also unto me in the days of 
Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel 
hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under 
every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.

And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou 
unto Me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister 
Judah saw it.

And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel
committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce: yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went
and played the harlot also.

Jeremiah 3:11,12,13 And the Lord said unto me, The backsliding 
Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return,
thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause 
mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord,
and I will not keep anger for ever.

Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed 
against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the 
strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my 
voice, saith the Lord.

Jeremiah 3:14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for 
I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and 
two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

Jeremiah 3:22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal
your backslidings.  Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the   
Lord our God.

Jeremiah 8:5,6 Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back
by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse 
to return.

I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented
him of his wickedness,  saying, What have I done?  Every one 
turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.

Jeremiah 11:7,8,9 For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in
the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even 
unto this day, rising early and protesting saying, Obey my voice.

Yet they obyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one 
in the evil imagination of their evil heart: therefore I will 
bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I 
commanded them to do; but they did them not.

And the Lord said unto me, a conspiracy is found among the men 
of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 11:9,10 They are turned back to the iniquities of their 
forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after 
other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of 
Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.

Therefore thus saith the L-rd, Behold, I will bring evil upon 
them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they 
shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

Jeremiah 14:7 O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, 
do thou it for thy name's ake: for our backslidings are many; we 
have sinned aginst thee.

Jeremiah 15:6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the L-rd, thou art 
gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against 
thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.

Lamentations 1:8 Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore 
she is removed: all that honered her dispise her, because they 
have seen her nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turned backward.

Ezekiel 33:99 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I 
have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked 
turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; 
for why will ye die, o house of Israel?

Ezekiel 33:98,99 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, 
and committeth inquity, he shall even die thereby.

But if the wicked turn from his wickdness, and do that which is 
lawful and right, he shall live thereby.

Hosea 4:966 For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now 
the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

Hosea 11:7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though 
they called them to the Most High, none at all would exalt Him.

Hosea 14:4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them 
freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

Matthew 12:13,14,15 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, 
he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

Then he saith, I will reutrn into my house from whence I came out; 
and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

Then goeth he, and taketh with himelf seven other spirits more 
wickedt then himelf, and they enter in and dwell there: and the 
last state of that man is worse than the first.  Even so shall it 
be also unto this wicked generation.

Luke 99:24,25,26 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he 
walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he 
saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.

And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

Then goeth he and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked 
than himself; and they entr in, and dwell there: and the last 
state of that man is worse than the first.

Hebrews 2:9,2,3 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed 
to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let 
them slip.  

For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every 
transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of 
reward;

How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation; which at 
the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto 
us by them that heard him;
  
God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and 
with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to 
his own will?

Hebrews 2:4,5,6 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh 
day on this wise, and God did rest the seventh day from all his 
works.

And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and 
they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of 
unbelief: 

Hebrews 6:1,2,3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine 
of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the 
foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward 
God,

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of
ressurection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And this will we do,if God permit

Hebrews 6:4,5,6 For it is impossible for those who were once 
enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made 
partakers of the Holy Ghost,

And have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world 
to come,

If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; 
seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put 
Him to an open shame.

Hebrews 6:7,8,9 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that 
cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by 
whom is it dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is 
nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and 
things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, 
but after this the judgment:

Hebrews 10:26,27,28 For if we sin willfully after that we 
have received the kowledge of the truth, there remaineth 
no more sacrifice for sins.

But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery 
indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or 
three witnesses:

Hebrews 10:29,30,39 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, 
shall be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son 
of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith 
He was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite 
unto the Spirit of grace?

For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, 
I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, the Lord shall 
judge his people.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 

Hebrews 10:38,39 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any 
man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of 
them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Hebrews 11:36,37,38 And others had trials of cruel mockings 
and scourings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, 
were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins 
and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, 
and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

II Peter 2:3,4,5 And through covetousness shall they with 
feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now 
of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth 
not.
 
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them 
down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to 
be reserved unto judgment;

And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth 
person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the 
flood upon the world of the ungodly;

II Peter 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha 
into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them 
an ensample, unto those that after should live ungodly;

And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation 
of the wicked:

II Peter 2:20,21,22 For if after they have escaped the 
pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the 
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled 
there in, and over come, the latter end is worse with 
them than the beginning.

For it had been better for them not to have known the way 
of righteousness than, after they have known it, to turn 
from the holy comandment deliverd unto them.

But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, 
The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that 
was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

II Peter 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these 
things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with 
the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

But grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus 
Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

Jude :5,6,7 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though 
ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people 
out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that 
believed not.

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left 
their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting 
chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in 
like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and 
going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, 
suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
